Touch of Class: Velvet Evening Wear

While winter weather may leave some preferring to burrow in the house, we keep finding ourselves with reason to dress up and go hit the town. Between Holiday parties, New Years parties, benefits, and galas, our social calendar takes no hibernation during these blistering months. As the seasons change so do our wardrobes, and winter nights call for one of our favorite fabrics: Velvet. Velvet can take many forms, and we’d be lying if we said we didn’t have a decadent full velvet suit or three tucked away in the closet, but the guise of velvet we’re most fond of, and that where we find the fabric truly comes into its own is black tie. There are times when black tie calls for strictly your standard tuxedo: weddings, dinners, consorting...

There are times when black tie calls for strictly your standard tuxedo: weddings, dinners, consorting minor princesses. But then there are times where black tie can have a little fun, particularly at parties, which is precisely why they also call it evening wear. And these evening parties are exactly where velvet shines. Shines is a perfect word as the sheen of velvet, especially through a camera’s lens, is one of the characteristics that makes it so ideal for a public appearance. The other is its drape; being a heavier fabric, a well-cut velvet coat will fall just so, accentuating your tailor’s crisp lines. But most importantly is what clothiers call its hand, essentially its feel, which if done right will be incredibly soft. Velvet will make women want to touch you. Which, after all, is why many of us try to dress well in the first place. As with a traditional tuxedo, a velvet evening jacket gives you the choice of three types of lapel; peaked, shawl, and notch. And as with a traditional tuxedo, we hope you’ll avoid notch. This is no time to be conservative. Those lapels can be faced in satin or grosgrain, or left in the same velvet as the rest of the coat. For a peaked lapel we like them faced, but please, lets stick with black. There is a line between being a dandy and being in poor taste. A shawl color can go either way, and for purists the traditional smoking jackets feature velvet shawl lapels with roped silk piping and elaborate toggle closures that are known as “frogs”. As for those velvet jackets that tie with a belt at the waist like a shortened robe? Those have one place and one place only, which is entertaining in one’s own home. Black is of course always appropriate, and the most subtle way to get away with velvet. But to do true service to that aforementioned sheen, jewel tones are the way to go. Emerald greens, sapphire blues, ruby reds, and amethyst purples, all can be pulled off if you’ve got the panache. Pair each with a pair of slim black trousers with a silk ribbon down the leg, patent leather shoes, and a crisp white tuxedo shirt with your best studs. And don’t forget the bowtie, black and self-tied. Despite what you may see at the Oscars, formal wear is never for long ties. Substitute a velvet jacket for your next big night out and see if you don’t find yourself transformed. A straightening in your stance, a spring in your step, there’s just something elegant about a man in velvet. That woman running her hand down your soft arm as you she laughs at all your jokes? She sees it to. And where to keep this little piece of sartorial magic in between making the rounds? Your Ghurka twill garment bag of course.

Ghurka Features

  • Our Leather

Ghurka leather is never pretreated to remove any flaws, we must begin by using the most naturally flawless hides available. While we utilize a variety of leather types based on which is best suited to a particular product, the majority of our goods are made from French calfskin. Calfskin has a finer grain and softer feel than traditional cowhide as the younger age of the animal brings less exposure to the harsh elements, the main cause of imperfection. French calfskin in particular is considered the finest in the world due to the fact that farms in France do not use barbed wire, one of the leading causes of mars and scratches. As no two skins are completely alike, each and every handcrafted leather Ghurka product will have an individual character that adds to its unique patina as it ages.

  • The Stitching

We use an extra-thick spun nylon that should never snap or fray, and all of our craftsmen ensure that each and every piece is stitched to our exacting standards. A careful review of any two parts of a Ghurka leather luggage piece will reveal exactly the same number of stitches per inch, a requirement for anything that leaves our workshop. The placement of these stitches is equally exact, precisely laid out to the millimeter to ensure that every bit of leather is assembled to last a lifetime.

  • The Brass

Brass is the only metal we've found that offers the strength, durability, and reliability that have become our hallmark. Every single piece of our hardware - from zippers, buckles, and hooks to the smallest of snaps and rivets are made solely from this rugged and beautiful material. A great deal of time and expense has been invested in perfecting our brass zippers. Every single tooth is individually machined and polished to ensure flawless operation after years of continuous use. And since all of our leather briefcase and leather travel bag hardware is solid brass and never plated, it too will develop a unique character and patina as it ages alongside our famous leather.

  • The Process

Since our founding, Ghurka has set out to manufacture the highest handcrafted leather goods available in the U.S. This has always begun with using only the finest hides in the world. While there are endless varieties of leather available, only a handful pass the rigorous selection process required to bear the Ghurka medallion. Likewise, our signature solid brass hardware and trademark stitching process ensure that our bags deliver an unparalleled owner experience and lifetime of use.
