An Officer and a Gentleman: Campaign Furniture

War may be hell, but for Officers during the height of the British Empire’s expansion during the 18th and 19th centuries, it didn’t have to be without some of the comforts of home. As the majority of these men were from England’s upper crust, for whom a military commission was a gentlemanly pursuit offering some adventure away from overseeing their vast estates, the comforts to which they were accustomed were particularly plush. A proper British Gentleman’s preparation for a military tour included a visit not only to their often Savile Row based tailor for impeccably bespoke uniforms, but also to their furniture makers to outfit them with all the necessities for a nomadically luxurious campaign. Campaign furniture, as it came to be known, had a couple of essential prerequisites. It needed to portable, so craftsmen created a wide array of lightweight furnishings that were able to be folded, compacted, or “knocked-down” as it was colloquially known. It also needed to be durable, as the constant transport of the pieces through an array of weather and wartime conditions contributed considerable wear and tear. And finally, to suit the rarified tastes of its intended owners, it needed to be beautiful. While the use of campaign furniture in one form or another dates back beyond the ancient Romans, it was imperial Britain that truly made it an art form. Famed English furniture makers like Chippendale and Hepplewhite as well as numerous smaller craftsmen were churning out custom campaign furniture for hundreds of well-appointed officers, to the point that some of the offerings began to be, included amongst their regular retail offerings. The foldable, collapsible, stackable knock-downs ranged from the essentials; beds, desks, chairs, and chests, to the luxuries; game tables, tea-sets, bookshelves, smoking kits, and bars were all popular requests. As we at Ghurka glean our very name and inspiration from the gear of an elite cadre of British officers of the era, it was only natural that we turned to campaign furniture when we decided to introduce our very first collection of home furnishings. Using the same top of the line materials you would find in our bags- solid brass and the world’s finest full-grain leathers- along with the addition of American White Oak, our Ghurka Campaign Furniture Collection is handcrafted right here in New York. The seven piece collection features a large lounger and smaller chair, a stool and an ottoman, as well as a table, a desk, and of course of a bar. A line of leather pillows and trays in varying sizes have also been produced to compliment the collection. Just as with the original campaign furniture that inspired it, all the pieces are collapsible, beautiful, and meant to last a lifetime. While this furniture may not travel as often as the originals were intended- or perhaps if you’re lucky, they will- there’s still no better collection from which to oversee your own empire.

Ghurka Features

  • Our Leather

Ghurka leather is never pretreated to remove any flaws, we must begin by using the most naturally flawless hides available. While we utilize a variety of leather types based on which is best suited to a particular product, the majority of our goods are made from French calfskin. Calfskin has a finer grain and softer feel than traditional cowhide as the younger age of the animal brings less exposure to the harsh elements, the main cause of imperfection. French calfskin in particular is considered the finest in the world due to the fact that farms in France do not use barbed wire, one of the leading causes of mars and scratches. As no two skins are completely alike, each and every handcrafted leather Ghurka product will have an individual character that adds to its unique patina as it ages.

  • The Stitching

We use an extra-thick spun nylon that should never snap or fray, and all of our craftsmen ensure that each and every piece is stitched to our exacting standards. A careful review of any two parts of a Ghurka leather luggage piece will reveal exactly the same number of stitches per inch, a requirement for anything that leaves our workshop. The placement of these stitches is equally exact, precisely laid out to the millimeter to ensure that every bit of leather is assembled to last a lifetime.

  • The Brass

Brass is the only metal we've found that offers the strength, durability, and reliability that have become our hallmark. Every single piece of our hardware - from zippers, buckles, and hooks to the smallest of snaps and rivets are made solely from this rugged and beautiful material. A great deal of time and expense has been invested in perfecting our brass zippers. Every single tooth is individually machined and polished to ensure flawless operation after years of continuous use. And since all of our leather briefcase and leather travel bag hardware is solid brass and never plated, it too will develop a unique character and patina as it ages alongside our famous leather.

  • The Process

Since our founding, Ghurka has set out to manufacture the highest handcrafted leather goods available in the U.S. This has always begun with using only the finest hides in the world. While there are endless varieties of leather available, only a handful pass the rigorous selection process required to bear the Ghurka medallion. Likewise, our signature solid brass hardware and trademark stitching process ensure that our bags deliver an unparalleled owner experience and lifetime of use.
