A Peek Inside: The Photography of Slim Aarons

The nineteen fifties and sixties were a golden age for a certain set of America’s rarefied leisure class. Prosperity was abound with markets booming again after the war, and the expansion of air travel, both commercial and private, allowed for this new “Jet-Set” to become just that. Behind the manicured hedges of Palm Beach, Lyford Cay, St. Barths, Palm Springs, Southampton et al, the rich were safely and happily at play, while the public excitedly followed their exploits in the pages of magazines such as Life, Town & Country, and Harper’s Bazaar. There was one man who was granted perhaps greater access to this world that anyone else from outside its exclusive domains, a photographer whose photos graced all three of those titles- George Allen “Slim” Aarons. Slim Aarons grew up in a lifestyle far removed from the one he would become famed for chronicling. Fresh out of school he enlisted in the Army, where he continued his boyhood hobby of photography, becoming the official cameraman for West Point. He served as a combat photographer during World War II, for which he was awarded a Purple Heart. Yet combat was not the place for young Aarons, who later quipped that the he “let it be known that the only beach I was interested in was one decorated with beautiful, semi-nude girls tanning in the tranquil sun.” This led him to California, where he began taking photos of Hollywood’s elite. Yet unlike most paparazzi, Slim Aarons not only photographed the stars, he became their friend. So well known was Aaron amongst the Hollywood set, his own apartment became the basis for the main set of Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” and star Jimmy Stewart set much of his character on Aarons himself. As Slim became exposed to more and more of these stars friends, his effortless charm brought him into their rarified social circles. Soon, he was the photographer of choice for such legendary socialites as CZ Guest, Bill and Babe Paley, The Aga Khan, and Aristotle Onassis. , His focus shifted from photographing Hollywood to, in his own words, “attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.” He never used a set designer or make-up artist, capturing instead his subjects in their own clothes in their natural surroundings, often entertaining by their swimming pools, or vacationing along the Italian or French Riviera. Being an outsider gave Aaron’s a unique appreciation to the opulent surroundings that had become commonplace to most he photographed, and between the access and this point of view he was able to perfectly capture a bygone splendor. Slim Aarons passed away in 2006 at the age of 89, but his legacy lives on in a series of books of his works including “Slim Aarons: A Place In The Sun”, “Slim Aarons: Once Upon A Time”, and “Poolside With Slim Aarons”. It’s nearly impossible to peruse Aaron’s photographs without yearning a bit for a return to those times or striving to replicate that sort of glamour. It’s a goal we certainly endorse, and our Rangefinder Camera Case is the perfect accessory to help capture your own slice of the good life.

Ghurka Features

  • Our Leather

Ghurka leather is never pretreated to remove any flaws, we must begin by using the most naturally flawless hides available. While we utilize a variety of leather types based on which is best suited to a particular product, the majority of our goods are made from French calfskin. Calfskin has a finer grain and softer feel than traditional cowhide as the younger age of the animal brings less exposure to the harsh elements, the main cause of imperfection. French calfskin in particular is considered the finest in the world due to the fact that farms in France do not use barbed wire, one of the leading causes of mars and scratches. As no two skins are completely alike, each and every handcrafted leather Ghurka product will have an individual character that adds to its unique patina as it ages.

  • The Stitching

We use an extra-thick spun nylon that should never snap or fray, and all of our craftsmen ensure that each and every piece is stitched to our exacting standards. A careful review of any two parts of a Ghurka leather luggage piece will reveal exactly the same number of stitches per inch, a requirement for anything that leaves our workshop. The placement of these stitches is equally exact, precisely laid out to the millimeter to ensure that every bit of leather is assembled to last a lifetime.

  • The Brass

Brass is the only metal we've found that offers the strength, durability, and reliability that have become our hallmark. Every single piece of our hardware - from zippers, buckles, and hooks to the smallest of snaps and rivets are made solely from this rugged and beautiful material. A great deal of time and expense has been invested in perfecting our brass zippers. Every single tooth is individually machined and polished to ensure flawless operation after years of continuous use. And since all of our leather briefcase and leather travel bag hardware is solid brass and never plated, it too will develop a unique character and patina as it ages alongside our famous leather.

  • The Process

Since our founding, Ghurka has set out to manufacture the highest handcrafted leather goods available in the U.S. This has always begun with using only the finest hides in the world. While there are endless varieties of leather available, only a handful pass the rigorous selection process required to bear the Ghurka medallion. Likewise, our signature solid brass hardware and trademark stitching process ensure that our bags deliver an unparalleled owner experience and lifetime of use.
